Montebello Island Safaris

Montebello surfing SAFARI & CHARTER

Ride the Remote Western Frontier

Hidden deep off the Pilbara coast, the Montebello Islands are one of Australia’s last true surf frontiers. Over a hundred coral-fringed islands form a maze of untouched lagoons and reef breaks where long-period swells from the Indian Ocean roll in, offering uncrowded perfection in crystal-blue isolation .
Surfing at the Montebellos is raw and untamed — the kind of experience surfers dream of. No crowds. No noise. Just you, the ocean, and an empty reef line peeling under the tropical sun.

The Surf Experience

Our Montebello Surfing Charters combine exploration with comfort.

Hosted by experienced skippers and guides who know every reef and channel, these trips are suitable for both adventure-seekers and seasoned surfers.

Typical conditions:

You’ll surf multiple zones depending on swell direction — from mellow cruisers perfect for longboards and SUPs to heavy ledges for those chasing barrels.
When the waves settle, swap your board for a mask and snorkel or fish rod, exploring calm lagoons and coral shelves that are teeming with tropical life.

A Day in the Islands

Wake to the smell of coffee drifting across the deck. The morning glass offers picture-perfect waves breaking over shallow reef passes. After an early surf, enjoy a full breakfast before exploring new breaks deeper in the archipelago.

Around midday, paddle the lagoons on your stand-up paddle boards (SUP’s), snorkel with reef sharks, or drop in a line for Red Emperor and Coral Trout.

Evenings bring golden light, sunset beers, and ocean‑to‑table dinners cooked fresh aboard your live‑aboard houseboat , The Full Monte.
Each charter is flexible — designed around wind, swell, tide, and your personal call on what makes the day perfect, which always comes with a fishing adventure.

Why Surf the Montebellos?

This is not just another surf trip — it’s the wild west of wave hunting, where premium charters meet pure adventure. Few have surfed these reefs; fewer still can say they had it to themselves.

When to Go

Prime swell season runs from April through October, when consistent W–SW groundswells wrap around the chain of islands and the winds stay light and offshore. This period also brings prime spearfishing, turtle nesting, and whale‑watching opportunities.

As with all Montebello’s charters, surfing conditions can’t be guaranteed and only Huey will know what’s installed for your trip!
